A language dies about every forty days
Of 7168 alive, 3078 are endangered. Most will leave nothing written behind.
Two hundred languages are the mother tongue of more than 88% of people. The other 6968 share what is left.
1431 have fewer than a thousand speakers. 463 have fewer than a hundred. 110 have fewer than ten. Nine in ten could be gone by 2100.
What disappears with a language is not vocabulary. It is a way of dividing up the world that took thousands of years to settle and exists nowhere else. Guugu Yimithirr, in Queensland, has no words for left and right and uses compass directions for everything, so its speakers keep a running orientation in their heads that speakers of other languages simply do not have.
You cannot learn 7168 languages. But knowing that they exist, and that they are not interchangeable, changes what you think a language is.
