Cookies: there are none

This site does not set a single cookie. Not an analytics one, not a tracking one, not even a “strictly necessary” one. That is why you were never shown a cookie banner: there is nothing to consent to, and a button about nothing is theatre rather than consent. If that ever changes, the notice arrives before the cookie does.

Nothing is loaded from anyone else

Fonts, styles, scripts and word lists all live on this domain. Until recently the fonts were fetched from Google, which meant your IP address reached a Google server on every page you opened, without anybody asking you. That is fixed. On an ordinary visit this site contacts nobody at all, so there is no third party to tell you about.

Your progress stays on your device

The words you mark as known, your practice schedule and your chosen interface language are written to your browser’s own storage, on your own machine. None of it is sent anywhere. There is no account, no server holding your data, and no way for me to look at it even if I wanted to.

The practical consequence is worth knowing: the progress belongs to that browser on that device. It does not follow you to your phone, and clearing your browser data for this site erases it permanently. That is why there is an export button, which writes everything to a file you keep, and an import button that reads it back.

No analytics, no measurement

I do not run Google Analytics or anything like it. I do not know how many of you there are, which languages you pick, or where you arrived from. My host keeps ordinary server logs, which is how every web server works, and they are not used to build a picture of anyone.

If you write to me

Booking a lesson or sending an email means I receive what you typed, and I use it to reply to you and to arrange the work. Nothing more. I do not sell it, I do not pass it to advertisers, and I do not add you to any list you did not ask for. If you have never written to me, I hold nothing about you whatsoever.

Where the word lists come from

The frequency data is counted over the OpenSubtitles 2018 dialogue corpus compiled by Hermit Dave, released under CC BY-SA 3.0. It is public linguistic data about languages. It contains nothing about you, and it was not built from anything you did here.

Your rights

Since I hold nothing unless you emailed me, there is usually nothing to request. If you have written to me and want to know what I still have, or want it corrected or deleted, write to [email protected] and I will do it. You do not need to give a reason. If you are in the EU or the UK and think I have handled something badly, you can also complain to your national data protection authority.

A note

This site is run by one person, not a company with a legal department. I keep as little as I can, for as long as I need it, and no longer. If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
