What sets it apart

It is its own branch of the family tree. Not Slavic, not Greek, not Romance, related to all of them only at the very top.
It has a mood for surprise. The admirative lets you mark a statement as something you have only just discovered and can hardly believe.
Its layer of Latin loanwords is so old that linguists use it to date sound changes in Latin itself.
Two dialects, Gheg in the north and Tosk in the south, and the standard written language is built on Tosk.
Definite articles stick to the end of the noun, the way they do in Romanian and Bulgarian. Three unrelated languages, one shared neighbourhood.

A promise that binds absolutely, to the point of sheltering an enemy

Written into the old Albanian code of law and treated as heavier than the state.
Under besa a guest cannot be touched while under your roof, which is why Albanian families hid strangers all through the war and considered it unremarkable.
Breaking it is not a lie. It is a loss of face that outlives you.
